How can counselling help?

Most people experience emotional difficulties at some time in their life. When in distress people often turn to family and friends for support and advice, but sometimes this not enough and professional help is needed. I provide a confidential and safe space in which we can think together about your concerns.

I will listen to you and respond to you as an individual, without discrimination or judgement. In this way trust can be established and a therapeutic relationship can develop. I believe that how we relate to others and how we respond to events in life is largely determined by our early experiences. Exploring our feelings in a search for meaning can bring relief from painful feelings and achieve lasting change.

Some reasons people seek counselling

  • Depression - low mood can make everything in life seem a real struggle. By sharing how we feel we take a crucial first step in challenging harmful negative thinking.
  • Work/career issues- work and our relationship to it is a major part of all our lives. Whether it be work related stress, career change, redundancy or workplace dynamics, - whatever your issue, it can be safely explored in the confidential setting of a therapeutic relationship.
  • Low self esteem - can be extremely debilitating. How have we arrived at the beliefs we have about ourselves? What events have shaped our self image? Questions such as these can be given sensitive examination within a trusting therapeutic alliance.
  • Anxiety - or panic attacks can be extremely alarming and lead us to restrict normal activities
  • Bereavement – loss in all it’s forms is incredibly powerful. Each of us reacts to loss differently, we all mourn or grieve in our own way. Not only is it a complex, confusing and profound experience, it is also simply painful.
  • Relationship difficulties - talking to someone who is not involved can provide a perspective that may be impossible to find within the relationship itself.
  • Questions of identity – being seen for who we are as individuals is a basic human right. I am comfortable and experienced in discussing issues of diversity, whether they be general and cultural or specific and interpersonal .
